BBQ #2 - World Myths, Religions & Philosophy  DUE Monday October 24, 2018

Pick Any 1 from A-F below and you simply need to answer this ONE question fully. You do NOT need to do a Before and After for that question. Please copy and put the question as the title to your response.
Your response should be at least 1 page single-spaced & include information from:
ASSIGNMENT CHECKLIST - Be sure to have:
A) Your In-Class Notes
B) Class Lecture & Discussion
C) at least 1 thinker from supplemental resource below
D) at least 1 thinker from Video Responses
E) Include a Citation section at end of your response.
SAMPLE OF HOW TO DO "C" IN YOUR RESPONSE:
C) Supplemental Resources: (REQUIRED) Use the thoughts of at least 1 thinker in your response.
C) EXAMPLE OF HOW TO CITE EVIDENCE: In Chapter 1 (paragraph 7) of her autobiography The Long Loneliness, Dorothy Day, a Catholic American journalist and social activist meditates on the idea of knowing oneself. She writes, "Much as we want to know ourselves, we do not really know ourselves. Do we really want to see ourselves as God sees us, or even as our fellow human beings see us? Could we bear it, weak as we are?"
C) EXAMPLE OF DEVELOPING EVIDENCE: This inspiring and serious section by Ms Day elevates my own thoughts on what role a God or gods can play in my own life. She seems to use her belief in God to heighten her awareness of herself and what good Ms. Day is doing with her limited time on Earth. This seems helpful and harmless to humanity, which is something a believer and non-believer in God(s) could support.  In this sense, Dorothy Day exemplifies one of many purposes to the idea of God in someone's life. It is no wonder Pope Francis, while on his recent visit to the United States in September 2015, cited Dorothy Day as a model for other Americans to follow who seek self-awareness and a serious meaning of their lives in these model times.
D) CITING VIDEO LINKS RELATED TO YOUR QUESTION - Documentary Table of Content & Transcriptions: Your response will be looked upon very favorably if you cite more than one video in your response.
D) EXAMPLE OF HOW TO CITE VIDEO EVIDENCE: At the end of Section 2: Freud - Golden Boy in the PBS Documentary: The Question of God,  Sigmund Freud claimed "I felt an overpowering need to understand something of the riddles of the world in which we live and perhaps, even to contribute something to their solution. I came to know all the fields of science. But to which of them would I choose to dedicate my life?"
D) EXAMPLE OF DEVELOPING VIDEO EVIDENCE:  Freud's desire to understand the "riddles  of the world" are important because...
E) CITATION FORMAT: This link shows how to cite video (such as a youtube clip) on your citation page after your response.
PICK 1 (A-F) Below:
A. Why do myths, religion & philosophy exist?
B. How would life be without myths, religion and philosophy?  Explain your answer.
C.  Is there an invisible force that dominates our lives today?  Explain your answer.

D. Why or How have myths, religions and philosophy given meaning to humans in the past as well as today?

E. Why is it important for a 15 years old to have a basic understanding of myths, religions and philosophy?

F. Explain what mythological, religious and philosophical ideas are useful to the lives of 15 year old today? Why are the ideas you mentioned more useful than ideas you did NOT mention?

VIDEO RESOURCES TO USE IN YOUR BBQ ABOVE:

6) Comedian CK Louis Gets Philosophical Over Cell Phones (Article 1) (Article 2)

B. How would life be without myths, religion and philosophy?  Explain your answer.

C.  Is there an invisible force that dominates our lives today?  Explain your answer.

E. Why is it important for a 15 years old to have a basic understanding of myths, religions and philosophy?
6) Comedian CK Louis Gets Philosophical Over Cell Phones (Article 1) (Article 2)

F. Explain what mythological, religious and philosophical ideas are useful to the lives of 15 year old today? Why are the ideas mentioned more useful than ideas you did NOT mention?

B) Group, individually or together, follow a suggested process below:

a) Speculate / Forethought Before you analyze info, guess what you think the information will say about the 2 topics.
b) General Data Discovery - After you have analyzed the information, create a generalization about your topics (ie the higher the income per person, the higher the life expectancy). Was your original forethought correct / incorrect?
c) Evidence - Using the gapminder information for your topics, give examples to prove your generalization
d)  Interesting Finds - Share something unusual or noteworthy to share with others / Tracking a nation
e)  Skeptical Claim - explain why your generalization might NOT be correct.

GEOGRAPHY EXTRA COOL ONLINE STUFF
Mr P mentioned in class how Maps don't always tell the truth or distort the truth. Here is a short video illustrating what Mr P was saying.

Why All Maps Are Wrong?

There are many many types of maps. The Mercator World Map makes areas at the bottom or top like Greenland look large and areas in the middle like Brazil look small. At the The True Size.com you can compare the true size of areas. Start with Greenland and take it down to Africa and you will get a sense of how Greenland is oversized and Africa is undersized. Have fun!
